Returned Peace Corps Volunteer - living as possibly the only American in a third world community for an extended period of time. Having to adapt to foreign obstacles (including dangers like crime and disease) with no immediate support from the U.S. gov.

Military or ex-Military - war, enduring one of the worst hells that there is, but having the support of fellow soldiers and heavy financial backing by the U.S. gov. Part of an institution with lots of history and cool uniforms.

Military nearly NEVER work alone (including Special Ops). Everything is a TEAM effort. The nature of two are completely different.

This is an old PCV's perspective.

The number of women who were fascinated by my adventures after I got back was about 90% less than I thought it would be when I went over.

I was the only person with American within 50 miles of my school.
It would be rare indeed to be the only American in a country.

What a good 'would you rather' question. Honestly, I'd say that it's not the profession, but the man--there are attractive things, even sexy things, about both professions. However, I've known men who Peace Corps Volunteers (I was one) that were revolting because they were not there for altruistic reasons and others whose sincerity was very attractive. Ditto for men of the military. Anything done for the right reasons, with sincerity and conviction, and for the greater good is magnetic--with a few fanatical exceptions. Do what you believe in and where you feel you can have a greater impact for good. It'll be sexy.

peace corps will ultimately attract me to a man. I think that a man who goes out of his way to directly aid those who are poor and suffering is a lot more interesting than a man that has been trained to kill. i'd have to say that most women(including me) do have that weakness when a man in uniform strides into the room. Military guys always have this aura of confidence about them and are usually in tiptop shape:)

If image is all a woman cares about, then the image of a soldier will always outweigh the image of a peace corp volunteer.

GO ARMY!
The uniform is hot, the insurance is great.
They do everything you mentioned for the Peace Corps, only don't get credit for it, instead get blasted by every freedom loving American there is.

I'd go for the Peace Corps guy, assuming he was healthy. I'm a peacenik myself, so I couldn't bring myself to date anyone who would voluntarily fight others and get paid for it.
