"Last year, I surveyed the firearms used in violent crimes... assault-type firearms were the least of our worries. It's really the .22 and .38-caliber handguns and 12-gauge shotguns that inflict the majority of carnage." An October 31, 1988 memo from S.C. Helsley, the then-Assistant Director of the California DOJ Investigation and Enforcement Branch.

.22 is uncommonly dangerous because people don't always go to the hospital because the wound is minor. The wound can then develop into a serious infection, particularly if the wound is in the torso. .22 is also the most commonly found caliber because they are less expensive than higher caliber guns, which have to be built stronger to withstand the greater force of firing more powerful cartridges.

The gun in your story is the one *selected* by your character for the situation they use it in. It should be based on their history, not what is common. Unless they are looking for a disposable gun. In which case, a .38 revolver would probably be the best.

I'd say the AK-47. It's only one I know so it must be pretty famous and deadly. Don't know for sure though I'm against guns.
