Okay, for those of you that don't know, here's how the education system works in the United Kingdom:

6-16 years of age - Compulsory education (school). Main exams are GCSE's in English, Science and Maths, along with other optional subjects such as religious studies, physical education, sociology etc - most take between 8-10 GCSE examinations

16-18 years of age - Optional schooling. Can either be at a college or at school. Main exams are A-levels, and those that choose to do these exams take up to 5 (with the usual being 3) A-levels in a range of subjects, or may take NVQs or alternative qualifications

18+ - University.

I got good grades in my GCSEs, and i'm 17 now and in the 2nd year of my A-levels. I'm doing law, psychology and history, having gotten grades A, B, and C in my first year respectively. I've applied to go to University in September, to do Criminology and Criminal justice. However, I just don't know whether to go. It costs over £2000 per year for uni

As well as fees for living costs, housing etc, and it would be me, not my parents who are paying it. Just to live in dorm rooms costs £90 a week! I’d have to get a student loan and I don’t really want to enter adulthood with loads of debt – my course is 3 years long. Also, I’m REALLY stressed at college at the moment – I have re-sit exams in 3 weeks and I just can’t bring myself to study, I hate the way I can finish the day at college and come home and I’m still having to worry about college… I kind of think I just want a job that I can leave at the office, a normal 9-5, but at the same time, I want to earn enough money that if I ever had kids they’d never have to go without.

I’m really, really stressed about everything in my life at the moment, and my doctor has referred me to a psychiatric outpatients unit for assessment because he suspects I have depression. I don’t know if going to university is going to make it harder or easier, and at the same time, I don’t want to miss out on the experience that so many people my age get an uni, or to not go and then not be able to get the sort of job I want.

What should I do?

Go to the University. With the extra money you will make from having a degree, you will be able to pay back the loans.

You will be fine. Most people get a little nervous going into college. It is a big leap, but you are smart and you will do fine. Make the leap you will be awesome....

Well first you need to take care of your depression. College is another thing. First you should not worry about having a debt from college since you will have a higher earning power. Maybe you should take a year off to get mentally well and go back.

Only you can know what is best. Do what you want to do but the most important thing is your happiness. See site below for natural help for depression.

Also has advice from a pschiatrist like what your doctor may not tell you about depression. Then your goal is not to just not be depressed. It is to be extremely happy. So take care of yourself. In the USA here Bill Gates dropped out of college.

Er, okay. Let's see.

I understand your school system, 'cause my country's education system follow after yours.

I know its really stressful and there's huge competition, etc.

But here's the thing. What are you planning to be? There are other schools and institutions that allows you direct courses of your preferance. Like design institutions, etc. You'll get your degree faster and with less stress.

So I suggest you find other ways if you think uni will be too stressful for you.

Higher education may be optional. But in the working-world, its almost compulsory. Don't give up on it.

You sound like a really smart girl. Maybe you could find a job for a year, while you live with your parents you might be able to save some money, and go to university next year, make sure you tell them that is what you are trying to do so that they can help you save and not make you spend the money.

First thing you need to do is relax. You don't need to go RIGHT NOW. If you're so upset and stressed I'd say wait awhile. Take some time off. Maybe get an office job like you mentioned and do it for awhile and see how you like it.

University will always be there. There's no rush. You don't have to decide now.
