best answer here is to buy a personal heart rate monitor. You can get it at any sports store. It straps a belt around your chest and you wear the watch with it. You put in your stats, i.e. height, weight, age...and it will tell you calories burned and avg heart rate which are what you really want to know.

most of the time these measures are pretty accurate. if you are at a gym, they usually have the newest equipment out there. the best way to know about the calorie gage is if it asks you to enter your weight. if you enter your weight then the calories it says you've burned will be very accurate. also with heart rate, you could always see what the treadmill says, and then take your own heart rate and compare. to take your own heart rate, you can check on your neck by counting your pulse for 10 seconds and then multipling this by six.

If you're an average person with an average stride, they are fairly accurate. The more you deviate from average the less accurate they become.
