Ask the host if they would like you to contribute anything in particular...a lot of people appreciate a little help, even if it's just a little nibble like a relish tray or something. It's the thought that you are willing to participate actively in the party and take a little trouble to help out that will really count.

Yup, I say offer to bring a desert, in advance. Easy enough to pick up a cheesecake or pie from a resturant or bakery. I know if I were having a dinner party, I would love the desert to be gifted that evening.
