I got a Yugoslavian made SKS 59/66. I really like it, it is in great shape, and I want it to last a lifetime. I take really good care of my stuff, especially my guns but I want to know which parts, if any, are prone to wearing out and/or breaking so that I can keep them on hand in the case they become hard to find in the future.

I heard the gas tube is prone to getting smashed or dented in thus not allowing the piston to move freely, is this a problem? Can the parts be easily machined by a skilled metal worker with access to good tools?

You probably wont need many parts on hand, they are pretty durable. If you want to be on the safe side i would get an extra fireing pin and spring, and a replacement guild rod and recoil spring. As far as a gas tube, i wouldn't bother, unless you beat the hell out of it it will be fine.My sks hasnt had anything break on it , and i dont see a reason to buy any replacement parts, which would cost at least $50(for what is listed above), for a rifle I only paid $100 for in the first place. If something does break, ill just have to shoot other guns for a week or 2 untill the replacement parts arrive.

For sks that's easy, just to have them on hand, just in case, I'd get a set of springs, and a couple firing pins, the firing pins are free floating and are prone to wear out, unless a high quality aftermarket stainless steel firing pin is used.Maybe a gas piston, but unless you really rapid fire a lot, a gas piston should last you for many years.

I would check on the firing pin, as well as he entire bolt itself, gas tube, and main moving parts these are the parts that used the most therefore are more likely to fail. Of course you should also make sure the rest of the rifle works properly as well.

Those things are made pretty tough.....It would take some abuse to dent the gas tube.......I've heard of them getting gummed up from not cleaning it out.........If you take care of it, I don't know what you would ever wear out.......
