I don't know really know but I think you don't realize how you really feel until they say I'm leaving you. Then you think hey, I don't want her to go ,I feel like I'm falling in love with her now, just didn't realize it but I don't want her to leave me. But, sometimes you have waited to long to wake up and see how much she really means to you. She is leaving and sometimes there isn't a damn thing you can do to make her say, she is through. You waited just a little to long.

If it "wakes up" when they are leaving, then it never was, and your feelings are missplaced. This is more likely remorse, and the fear of being alone that is acting up, and in my opinion, you didn't have love in the first place.
