Legally yes, but you need documentation for it to stand in court. The dog owner is whomever's name is on the contract between the seller and the purchaser. If there was not a contract then get the seller to sign a letter stating when the dog was purchased and that the dog is rightfully yours.

If you paid for the dog, contact the police with any proof of purchase you may have....do you have a copy of the check or a credit card statement? A receipt? Maybe you know someone who was there with you when you bought the dog or someone who saw the receipts to serve as a witness for you in case you don't have the receipt anymore...if you have some type of registration or papers, that could also show proof of ownership.

If you purchased the dog for a yourself, not a gift intend for him, the dog is yours. I don't think him paying for vet bills has any bearing on the case unless you borrowed the money from him for the vet bills using the dog as collateral. Good luck to you and I hope you get your dog back.

the dog belongs to you sweetheart! you paid for it. it's
his fault for paying the vet bills for a pet wich he didn't own. too bad, too sad. go get your dog! or better yet let the local police get it for you! that would be a safer situation, he may have a temper with you, if you went alone!

it is illegal. inform the police, they can get your dog back. if you paid more than $500 for the dog your ex can be charged with grand theft

Who had physical custody of the dog? If it was living with your ex, there is probably nothing you can do about it.

Why bother with it? Move on with your life and forget about the dog.

Yes, you bought the dog he/she is under your name and is your property. You own him/her and your ex cannot sell her/him!

Sorry, CJ, but you're seriously boned. I'd think of something he likes and destroy it.
