No because they believe in nothing. They think once you die its all over, and that God is fake and that the world was created by science and evolution. I dont agree with it at all, but I know and athiest and they are pretty nice.

Its easy enough to make anything a religion. If one puts convenient values as the basis for belief, voila, RELIGION!

sh chap. 14 p. 329,342 Modern Disbelief—Should the Search Continue? ***

“God is no longer a habitual concern for human beings. Less and less do they call him to mind as they go through their days or make their decisions. . . . God has been replaced by other values: income and productivity. He may once have been regarded as the source of meaning for all human activities, but today he has been relegated to the secret dungeons of history. . . . God has disappeared from the consciousness of human beings.”—The Sources of Modern Atheism.

American pollster George Gallup, Jr., observes that “you really don’t find much difference between the churched and unchurched in terms of cheating, tax evasion, and pilferage, largely because there is a lot of social religion.” He adds that “many are just putting a religion together that is comfortable for them and titillates them and is not necessarily challenging. Somebody called it religion à la carte. That’s the central weakness of Christianity in this country [U.S.A.] today: There is not a sturdiness of belief.”

Atheism is like many religions(so called Christian)that has credulity as its basis and not the faith of the Bible--when you build belief based on no substance, like the pseudo-science, evolution, then indeed you have a no substance religion.

In the fairy tale "The Emperor's New Cloths"--the two tailors had convinced the emperor and his officials that only those with no intelligence could not see the "invisible cloth" --Interestingly religion based on false doctrine, such as the trinity, hell-fire, etc. are indeed very much like the no substance believers in evolution

actually the true definition of religion is a belief. and so athiesm would fit this as well as evolution. people like to say that it is creation vs evolution or religion vs science but it is not. they are both a religion. and so if athiesm being that most athiesms are evolutionist. now if you know someone who is a true athiesm then they will not use Gods name in vain and say God. i am dumb lol ok. first of religion as definition was just a belief. now they have tried to say it is a belief in a god or what not. but before recently all it was and the meaning was a belief. then it turned to be a belief on how we became about. so actually atheism is a belief. they also believe in the evolution theory. it is a belief and therefore a religion. just like people try to say that it is religion vs science when it is religion vs religion or science vs science. and right now all the science points to christianity. they have not been able to disprove that God made the earth

Non belief in God or gods or Divine Being is what an athiest believes. Religion is communal beliefs and/or personal beliefs in God, Higher Power or the Supernatural. So, I would say no atheism is not a religion, although it is a communal belief in no God.

Atheism, not athiesm. Of course morals don't come from religion-- many zealously religious people throughout histroy have been as amoral as they come. Reciprocity, compassion, common sense-- those things build a fine moral compass, but indeed, they're fairly relative in theory (though, frankly, not in practice) and people who need black and white morality fear the idea that someone's morality doesn't come from a book. Ultimately, they think god is absolute enforcer of morality, so if we don't believe in god who is keeping is acting morally? It's ignorance, fear, and self-doubt that make people look down on atheism.

Atheism is not a religion and no way near religion....

A religion involves in beleiving in a God.... atheism, has nothing to do with God, because they don't beleive in one!!

If you look at every other religion it involves beleiving in a God... name me one proper religion where God is not mentioned (meaning there is no God in that religion).

There is none, there for come to the conclusion, athiest is not a religion, but a discision... it basically means not believing in God....

If it believed in God and had a way of life... it would've been a religion.....

To Ahnamareea (below)
The questioner did use a disctionary to get the definition of the word 'religion' to be : 'A noun- Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.'

That's what I got in the dictionary... So you should get your facts right, before you speak such nonsence ;) . Please do your own research before criticising others.... you did not even answer the question.....

Have a ncie day ;)

Atheism is more like a philosophy and it's less likely to hurt anybody than believing in a god who advocates murder. It could be defined loosely as a spirituality as the definition of a spirituality is basically any system of thought that tries to explain the nature of human existence, the nature of god or gods, and what happens when we die, atheists have their own answer to all of these things.

If that is the one and only definition than, no, it wouldn't be a religion. Another definition of religion is "a cause or activity persued with zeal or conscientious devotion." By that definition it is possible that atheism could be considered a religion.

in my opinion, athiesm is a non-belief (however psychologists and sociologists and philosophers would say it is a belief because it is the absence of belief so it's a category, kinda like the one hand clapping thing they always refer to..can you hear one hand clapping) and it's like the "other" column on a census taker's form wherein it states "what nationality are you", i.e. what religion are you if you don't fit into the categories everyone else is listed in..

That is not the definition of a religion. That would mean all of the non-theistic religions, such as Buddhism, really aren't religions. Please consult a dictionary before saying such nonsense.

No, it is a lack of one. Some say that it is a religion because "you have to believe there is no god" but this is untrue because the burden of proof is on the believer.

So, atheism (right or not) is not a religion.
