I don't know about the prescription ointments being discussed here. If you don't go prescription, then one good choice would be a simple cleaning regimen using Oil of Olay or Dove soap and warm water. They are gentle on the skin without drying it out.

If you want to spend a little more money, go to this website www.ncpmiracle2.com and get the regular soap, neutralizer gel and the moisturizer. This stuff is great for your skin and will do no harm whatsoever and is much cheaper than prescription. And because it's concentrated and/or requires very little product per usage, it lasts a VERY long time. I have used these products for over 5 years now and I love them!

What ever you do, DO NOT EVER use alcohol or alcohol based products on your face!!!!! Yes, they will dry your skin out and remove the oil. But in the end, it very much WORSENS your skin condition. The alcohol completely dries out your pores, which causes the oil glands to go into overdrive in an effort to replace the oil in the pores. The over production of oil then clogs the pores even worse than before. Alcohol and alcohol based products are NOT gentle to your skin. DON'T USE THEM!!!

Every one's face is different. You have to try several products to see which one is the best.

Don't use products with alcohol beacuse that would enlarge your pores.

But the fundamentals of all the products are just to keep your pores clean.

Based on personal experience, if you follow the cleaning regiment and your condition is still not improving, the pimples are caused by hormone imbalance, which is more difficult to address, because it can be caused by genetics, stress, health conditions, etc.

I've never tried proactive because it's too expensive. It might be effective but I think the price might have something to do with that. If something's expensive, your mind would subconsciousnessly think it's better. And somehow your body will actually show that effect physically. It's called the Placebo Effect in the science field.

Anyway,
The best doctor you can get is your self. Be your own doctor and get to know your body type.

Like others have stated, Proactiv is an answer for some, but not all, it dries the skin out much too entirely which in turn can cause an overbuild up of sebum which causes your pores to be clogged, thus creating more acne, if you're completely sick of your acne and are ready to try anything, you should go for the oral antibiotics, some take tetracycline, and doxycycline is another popular oral medication that controls your oil production amongst other things...out of all the things I've tried, and with all the face washes out there I've spent my money on, I wish I had learned about doxycycline earlier, it really gets rid of the inflamation and redness, and then you can use differin cream in addition to the antibiotic because this cream that you put all over your face speeds up your cells reproduction so that it is constantly pushing the bad scared cells off therefore, overtime, getting rid of scars, :)

it's the salicylic acid that is drying your face out to begin with. that's how it dries out pimples. you can use the cleaner less often. you can use it either in the morning or night and use something else at the other time. i recommend Cetaphil. It is the best thing for your skin, because it cleans very gently and is soap free. don'yt use soap-it will also dry out your face. use a hypoallergenic, non comegenic lotion on your face, for combinaton skin. definitly oill free. something that a lot of people who get pimples do is use so much acne medication to clear them up. what happens is when you overload on these acne products that suck the moisture out of your skin ( benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid) it makes your skin think it nees to produce more oil since it's dry, creating breakouts. i have combination oily skin and the best thing that works for me is to wash my face mmorning and night with Cetaphil, use an alpha hydroxy scrub twice a week, and use a benzoyl peroxide acne spot treatment on pimples. hope this helped!

Proactiv works really nicely for me, too. It's expensive compared to other store-bought products but I'd say it's worth it for its effectiveness. It doesn't just clear up pimples, it also keeps your face really healthy and soft and radiant.

If you have a bad problem you should see your doctor or a dermatologist. But if you're looking for something good that's over the counter I would try keils products which are all natural (it's what madonna uses!) or proactive solution.
