First off, don't do a job because of the money, do it because its something you enjoy. you don't even need a long term job, your young, do something that interests you on a whim. If you want to learn to snowboard, work at a ski resort, if you want to do your makeup better, go to cosmetology school. The point is do what you like, your degree shows people that you can commit to something for four years, thats it. And that girl didn't get an entry level job for 80k, she worked hard at her lower paying entry level and met the right people that showed her doors to open. You have to be willing to start at the bottom to get to the top sweety, thats just reality

OH my GOd!!! you sound just like me!!! I also graduated with a degree in psychology, worked in the field and hated it. Now I'm working in the financial industry and I'm secretly saving up for hair school. I'm saving up for one year. I'm doing this cuz I want to go full time. I'm 23 and I figure I am still young.
Doing hair is very exciting and I am just fascinated with it. The money is good and in most cases you can be your own boss. To make people feel beautiful is great, I love it. Yeah most beauty schools are a little on the expensive side but it is very much worth it. You build your clientale. Everyone is going to need a hair stylist. I say if you don't have any saved up now, get a part time job save your butt off and go!! See ya at a hair show!

I don't mean to say your hairdresser is not telling you the truth; but 80K? Does she own the salon? 80K is $40.00 an hour. Do you think this is true? The truth in life is this...pple who make a lot of money (or relatively speaking) don't advertise what they make. Where is she located? L.A.; Miami, New York. 80K a year in a place like those is not ALOT of money anyways. When she said 80K that must have been gross; before what she spends on her chair in the salon; spending money on beauty tools, hair color, etc. Has she been in it for a long time. I'm not saying its not possible; but it would be a rare occurence. Unless she an owner.
From what i have heard about entry level beauty positions, they are very low income; maybe $10 an hour.
Anyways, i think you are going for a fast fix? If you think you'll come out of beauty school making even 40K your first year, i think you will be dissapointed. Why not just take a year off? Instead of just getting more student loans. Be sure about where you want to go. Yes, you defintinely will beed a Masters degree in psychology to get a job; but school psychologists do very decentently(maybe average is 30.00 an hour) or 60K a year. Don't let this one thing about your hair dresser influence you. Unless your dream is to be in the beauty business and have your own successful salon; that's where the real money will come in. My advice; wait at least 6 months to a year, and research everything before you make a concrete decisions. Good luck

I wouldn't say you could work full time while in beauty school. It takes a lot out of you, believe me.
You can make quite a bit of money as a cosmetologist, it depends on where you work and how good you are.
I would suggest being a psychology major before being a cosmetologist! You have no idea what some of these people will tell you while they're sitting in your chair!
I spent almost $20,000 on school. I went to a good school. It was worth it.
Like said before, do it because you want to, there's a lot more to it than you think. ( you have to do chemistry, anatomy, etc...) MUCH more than you think! I would suggest researching before going to a school though. I highly suggest a Pivot Point accredited school (it's internationally recognised)
People I graduated with make as little as $20,000, and up to $100,000 (she's one of the lucky ones though!) It all depends on the direction you take!

well, i dont know about how much they make, but i do know about the Student Loans. If they are from the government, you can write them request a 'forbearance'. this allows the loan to stand still (no payment required) for three months.
keep applying every three months until your schooling is done or you are more settled.
call the office when you get the student loan bill and ask how to apply for it. usually they want a letter of hardship (your own letter as to what is going on in your life that effects the payment), and it to be notarized. sent via regular and certified mail.
they send you a reply when it has been accepted and implemented.
At least it will be one less problem, allowing you to focus on your new career.

If it interests you yes - people who are good with people make excellent hair designers because they listen to the client - a good application of your current degree. Cost varies depending on facility chosen and your income level at the time of application. You can attend a Occupational Center and go to school for a lot less than a Vidal Sassoon - my 3 favorite designers who work at very fashionable boutiques all attended occupational centers and then progressed to the more advanced stages by taking advantage of free training by vendors to introduce their products. Some schools actually pay you after the first 5 weeks as you develop a client base for the school you gain a commission. I hope this helped!

If you are really interested in Cosmotology, go. If you are not looking to do hair styling for a career, there are other options for people with a degree in Psychology. You could be a teacher.
