I mean they are only little for so long, why not enjoy it while you can?

I think there are several reasons for this, depending on the family.

I believe that many parents, because they use day care and have since their children were infants, are detached from their children. They want to pretend that their kids are older, so they can feel less guilt about their lousy parenting.

There are also parents who are divorced or never married and have active dating/sex lives in front of their children. Rather than exercising self-discipline and discretion, they expose their children to their dating/sex life and encourage their kids to get involved in their own dating life early, so they can pretend their kids don't really need them and that the parent can attend to their own needs.

A third group are people who were badly treated as kids. If they were to treat their kids differently, to have age-appropriate expectations, then they would be de facto admitting that their own parents were lacking. This is very painful for some people to admit.

A fourth group are, like those dating in front of their kids, just lazy and undisciplined. They want to see R movies, and so rather than giving their kids a wholesome life, they subject them to adult entertainment. Or, they're too lazy to tell their kids No, and set up limits.

American-style parenting is designed to ruin the attachment between parent and child. Human infants need - physically need - to sleep with their moms, they need to nurse on demand, they need to be held whenever they want it. American parenting still teaches this is wrong and therefore, many parents use formula, cribs, cry it out, and day care. Before the child is 2, the parents aren't really attached to them. When you are not attached to a child, it's possible to treat them very badly. Which is what hurrying kids to grow up can only be described as. It's not the parents missing out that is the problem - it is the kids getting a lousy life that is the problem.

Some people confuse parenting with some sort of competition. My child is smarter, prettier ( or more handsome), more athletic, more popular, etc. Some parents are just so insecure they cannot see their children as children and not as little adults. They also send their children mixed messages such as act your age and grow up.Please let kids be kids, they are little for such a short time.

Maybe because they never wanted kids in the first place but felt the societal pressure to pop out a couple of kids to "fit" into this mold we have created for people.

I'm NOT in a hurry at all! I hate that they grow up so fast. Now that I'm done having babies, I hate to watch how fast they grow. Granted I look forward to the potty trained part, but I really wish they could slow down.

It is important to enjoy the time with them while they are young, but it is also important to get them off to college - and out of the house. Party time for the parents!
