I would marinate the chicken overnight,in your personal preference of marinades. I always like mesquite and lime juice for bbq chicken. Then I would place the chicken in the oven on 250-300 for an hour to an hour and a half. before grilling in said marinade. I would use hickory wood chips(soaked in water of course) along with Mesquite Kingsford Charcoal, the only charcoal i cook with. I also use a spray bottle from the dollar store filled with balsalmic vineagar and bout 3-4 drops of liquidsmoke to spray on the bird as it cooks. Lastly, i would put the sauce or dry rub on the bird about 5 -10 minutes before taking it off the grill. If you do the marinade, oven method on a good fire about 20- 25 minutes. This is making me hungry.Enjoy.

I always cook the chicken in the oven anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes at about 350 degrees, and then I bbq it...the chicken practically falls off the bone this way.
