What kind of bird does well without a partner? I have a small cage and it is not big enough for more then one bird. I am looking for a breed that will be friendly and a good campainon.

A parakeet is the bird! I have 2 pairs myself, and they are very fun to watch. Parakeets work well without a partner. However for this to be possible, you'll have to spend tons of time with it, or else it'll just sit in it's cage plucking all of its feathers. Parakeets however, are very friendly and gentle to their owners. I have a special parakeet in which I named Cuckoo. I thought him to perch on my finger and sit on my shoulder without ever flying away. He is now 5 years old and still full of energy. So my best suggestion is a parakeet. They can live in small cages with a couple of toys inside. I hope my advice helps.

If your cage is large enough for a cockatiel then that could be a great bird for you. They do very well as single birds and as a matter of fact, they will bond to people better this way. I would avoid any mirrors in the cage as they seem to think their reflection is another bird and can become mirror obsessed.

Look for a young, healthy, hand fed cockatiel, one already used to being handled. Make sure you keep him/her socialized by handling him/her daily.

Before you make a purchase though, buy a book about cockatiels and read it completely. You can find one at most pet store which sells birds, or look online. There are many things you should know about them before you bring one home.

Good luck and have fun!!!

1.Birds are good companions only if you are a good companion.
2.You said a Small cage so might not be big enough for a cockatiel.
3. So, go for a ENGLISH PARAKEET And buy 1 for 1 small cage. A little bigger than a normal parakeet so it will work well for you.
4. About 40-50 dollars but take good care of him/her. Good luck.

Cockatiels are great. We had one when I was young girl. They are extremely easy to teach to talk. Just record your voice saying what you want the bird to mimick and leave it playing over and over while you are out one day. The next thing you know the bird will be talking. They are small and easy to take care of. The bird had the run of our house. We left the cage open. He would potty in his cage only, and follow us around. he was so cool

My Answerr is boring: The sparrows. All the sparrows. I like them b/c they are the only bird--other than the ground-feeding junco--that will come to the feeder when I put it close to the house window. They are not as afraid as the other, more clourful birds. I feed the wild birds only in the wintertime. I live in a rural area & have found out that paying for feed in the other seasons is just a waste of $$ as the birds have so much food elsewhere that they won't eat from the feeder, & the food goes bad & I end up having to feed the bird seed to the chickens--layer mash is a lot less expensive than the bird seed.

If you like a song bird, a male canary is one of the best choices. I agree cocktail is a good companion bird for new bird keepers.
A canary male sings more often if there was no other birds.

ALL birds do better with another bird...
birds are highly intelligent and they will be bored/stressed if alone and in a small cage

parrots are ok by themself but even they are better with another bird (even if in different cage) and MUST have lots of human interaction...

most bird cages are too small for even one bird.. birds require flight room which sadly is lacking in most cages.. I think you shouldnt get any bird if it would be by itself in a small cage.. or get a bigger cage...

Lovebirds do well alone sorta if you get a mirror. My bird is doing fine and I had for for 3 years. And parakeets are good too.

My top 3 picks are budgie, cockatiel or lovebird. All 3 species make great single bird pets!

parakeets are very friendly and very smart. I would get one. But, you have to be sure to play with it because without a partner it depends on you to keep it company.

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!
