Muhammad Ali was 18 when he won the light heavyweight Olympic title as the brash Cassius Clay.
In his autobiography, "The Greatest," Ali wrote that he tossed his gold medal into the Ohio River after a fight with a white motorcycle gang, which started when he and a friend were refused service at a Louisville restaurant.

That was Cassius Clay. He came back from the 1960 Olympics and expected to get a heroes welcome but he just saw the racism that existed. He got frustrated by that and threw the medal off a bridge.

One of your previous answers is correct. Ali was refused service at a restaurant in his home town of Louisville when he returned from Rome. He threw his medal in the Ohio River.

Ali did. When he came back to Louisville, he was given a hero's welcome and even a parade downtown, but he couldn't get service because of his color. In his frustration, he threw his gold medal in the Ohio River. It was later replaced and a new one was given to him because he expressed regret for what he had done.
