In Windows, there's a nifty feature called Alt-Tab. It easily switches between open windows. My question is, can I Alt-Tab to the Desktop (the equivalent of Win-D)? Thanks.

No, you cannot. Win-D is the only way. Alt-Tab only switches between open windows.
