If you are able to perfect a way of stopping thumbsucking, then you could patent it and retire tomorrow.
I tried all the usual things with my daughter such as gold stars on a calendar till she reached a reward of a toy, or anti-fingernail biting solutions, and putting Band-Aids over it. Nothing worked and it just tended to make her frustrated.
She eventually gave up herself at about the age of 11 when peer pressure kicked in. Hopefully your child will give up sooner! Gently, gently is the only way. Dn't get too hung up over it.

Of my three kids, the one who wouldn't quit sucking her thumb until she was 8 or 10 turned out to have the best bite and best smile of them all - without braces. Lip pressure is an awesome force. Once she actually quit, it was only a matter of a few months before it was obvious that her teeth were being pushed back down where they belonged.
So, take heart. He might not need braces after it is all said and done. I'd start saving, though.

I'm a dentist.
I hope you're from a foreign country and that English is your second language.
That aside, you might consider taking your child to a pediatric dentist to see if an appliance can be tried to prevent him/her from doing it. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. If it's causing dental problems, then it should be tried.

That's not a bad habit. It is his security. Don't make a big deal out of it. He will stop eventually. If you make a big deal out of it, he will continue longer.
