It is an outcome of faith and love -

Whom having not seen ye love in whom though now ye see him not yet believing ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, 1 Peter 1/8

We joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5/11 and God fills us with joy, 15/13. It is a fruit of the Spirit, Galatians 5/22 and God's word received gives joy, 1 John 1/4, indeed anything received from God can bring joy.

In God's presence is joy, Psalm 16/11 and God is our exceeding joy 43/4 and His salvation is a joy, 51/12. It is also a strength, Nehemiah 8/10

It would seem that it is not to be sought for itself but is given by God for encouragement or through obedience or to strengthen us or it accompanies our exercise in spiritual matters.

Contemplation of God and all that He is and does and of His great salvation brings joy.

The more we know Jesus Christ the more will we have joy.

One of the most effective ways to retain the joy of Jesus Christ in your life is to stay away from negative non believers.

They seem to be able to suck the joy of most everything right out of a person.

To find the joy of Jesus Christ, read his word, for in the beginning was the word, and the word was made flesh. If you feel compelled to read Gods word, he is making himself known to you. You can choose at that point to follow or to reject the calling. If you follow the invitation from God to follow him, you will receive the joy of Jesus Christ in your life.

I believe it is found through prayer. One on one communion with God about all aspects of my life, the good and the bad, helps me with my faith and that can always bring joy.

To retain it, I recommend Romans 8:31-39. It tells how there is nothing and nobody who can separate us from His Love.
