Well, I am not sure what kind of dog you have, but there is not really any dog food that can minimize shedding. What you CAN do is feed a premium high-quality dog kibble, something WITHOUT corn, wheat, beef, or by-products. The better the food, the more healthy overall your dog will be, and that DOES include skin, fur, and coat.
The other thing you can do it buy a FurMinator. It runs about $35-$65 and will last you forever if you take care of the blade. It is a sharp blade that digs the undercoat of the dog out, which prevents excessive shedding from the dead fur.
If you can commit one half hour to one hour each week to completely furminate your dog, the shedding will be amazingly minimal!
I have nine dogs, all of different coat types, and I love love love this grooming tool!!

I linked the website for you to see:

All dogs are going to shed but excessive shedding is usually from a poor diet. I feed my dogs a holistic food called Life's Abundance, it is an all natural food with antioxidants. There are no chemical preservatives or by products (which most dog foods have). If you go the their website www.dogfoodzone.com they actually compare all major dog foods and break it down for you. My Lab use to excessively shed and since I improved his diet the problem is gone. Azmira Holistic care also makes several supplements you may want to look into to improve coat quality. Theirr website is www.azmira.com. For healthy coat you want the fish oils/Omega 3 vitimans. Supplements are necessary if you decide to go with commerical foods that are high in by product, chemicals, and lacking nutrients,

I swear by Science Diet made by Hill's.

It is a food that is sold at Veterinarian offices, as well as at pet stores. IAMS is good, but I have found that Science Diet does not contain quite as much fat as other foods might. Just go on www.hillspet.com and go under Prescription Diet® for Dogs.

You didn't mention what breed of dog it was. Is it a short hair dog or a sheep dog? Dogs with longer hair are going to shed, and require a lot of extra grooming. If you set aside time at night to brush and comb your dog, it will accomplish two really important tasks. Getting rid of extra hair as well as giving you and your dog some major quality time together.

Again! Your dog sheds because he lacks the VITAMINS his body used to produce, and with age he NO LONGER CAN, much like humans. Remember that most every trial for vitamins and medications are done on dogs. Try "Super 14" !( I swear by it, after the Veterinarian told me to put my sweet dog down because there was no hope for him. At 12 years old...you should see him happy running anf jumping with no signs of being tired, shedding or hot spots) Super 14 can be gotten at a Pet Store for about $21.00. A good peppermint derived shampoo will also help with maintenance of his coat.

Brush your dog regularly.

And like someone else said, it depends on where you live and what kind of dog it is.
