UNUSED tkts are valid for exchange for a year (typically) but having an "open" return only applies if you have flown your outbound and want a flexible return date. Though it is "open", you still have to meet the restrictions of your ticket or you may be required to "buy up" and pay a higher fare if you have exceeded the maximum stay on your fare. ie., it's open for a return w/in 6 months, etc. So, you should check before you go on your trip so you don't have any unexpected surprises when you are booking your return flight.

It will depend on the FARE BASIS of the ticket. It can be anywhere from 3 months to one year.

From WHERE are you flying FROM to WHERE are you flying TO?
