the proper way is to fill the glass half way. there should be an equal amount of whiskey and empty space inside that cup.
the same goes for brandy

It depends if you are mixing it with something or not. If you are making a drink one or two shots and fill the rest of the cup with ginger ale or coke...throw in some ice and you are good to go.

standard is 1 1/4 shots unless you work at a hotel bar or the airport then you do the least you can get by with.
