No. Eternal Hindu religion as it originated ( & not how it finally turned out ) was meant for the well-being & worship of life & all of god's creations. Here comes the reason for worshipping snakes. And though river is not alive, ancient men without so much as materialistic scientific knowledge believed them to be flowing from gods ( like Ganges was thought to be flowing from the head of Lord Shiva ) & hence worshipped them.

A river isn't literally a god...

However, just as a god is the source of creation, a river is also a source of our existance on earth...

If you observe - the so called"sacred rivers" are normally the perennial rivers which were clean and pure in their prestine form.

These rivers especially the ganges provided water for drinking, domestic uses as well as for irrigation.

It's perennial flow helps to maintain the groundwater table.

It deposits fertile alluvial soil along its course. This is especially benificial for agriculture which is the livelihood for most Indians and the source of food for all.

Apart from this, the rivers have mythological significance.

These are the reasons why the river is worshipped...

It reflects the sensitivity of the indian civilization towards the importance of nature....it helps to maintain ecological balance.

Since it is one of the elements (not chemically speaking) and most of our body is made from it, it assumes more importance.

the tradition has been followed since ancient times.

At first, the civilization was along the banks of the R. Indus and later shifted towards the Ganges....as the former area had sandy soil in most parts (not as well suited for agriculture) and also because the region was more earthquake prone.

The worship of rivers is symbolic of worship of life sustaining water - a reverence to nature that permits our very survival on earth.

how can a river be a god.

The Ganges River originates in a cave in the high Himalayan mountains...it runs through many valleys and ends up as the Ganges outpouring in India.

The Ice outcropping, melting in the cave, is very reminiscent of a male sex organ......This outcropping is considered to be THE ORIGIN OF ALL GODHOOD. It is called MAHA BONE!

Obviously the river flowing from Maha Bone requires worship and adoration.

PS= This is the same MAHA BONE that is worshiped by the Freemasons and the Mormons.

Because the river is where life comes from, and the water from the river is what keeps them alive.

They worship it because they have respect for it and what it does to help them.

...Like christians worship god because they have respect for him and what he does to help them.

If god didnt help them, give them life and promise them eternity, they would not worship him but look down to him like they do satan.

Hope that made sense.
