together w/ bf/gf or hus/wife on a certain day but didn't have a set activity would it be ok to suddenly make plans w/ someone else because you figure there wasn't a specific activity so you didn't really have plans?

I was actually the victim in this situation. I found it to be rude and still do.

Of course not. Once you've made plans to get together with someone, you've created a binding social contract, regardless of whether you had specific plans or not.

It would be totally inappropriate and inconsiderate to suddenly change your plans when someone is expecting you. The only exception is a last minute emergency.

If you've rethought it and decided you really don't want to get together with this person, you need to give them at least 24-48 hours notice.

No--that's pretty much rude.

That's like saying, "Sorry! I wanted to do something with you, but you're too slow to act so I ditched you for something else."

It's Christmas. Nothing is open. The least you can do is do SOMETHING with your significant other.

You said you would do something with your S.O.
There is no activity set yet, but it's pretty much understood that you two want to do something together.
You don't just ditch that person--great commitment right there.

I guess it would be ok. But on a special day, spending time with your BF/GF or Hus/Wife is implied.

That would be rude. But if you call and get your sig. other's permission first, and he or she is OK with it, then that would be fine. Don't give an answer to your friend until you know that it's OK with your sig.

no, it's not okay

if you have plans with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend - you can't make plans with somebody else

if you don't have plans with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend - it's obviously not a problem to make plans with somebody else
