I've been in India for 28 years and I've never observed any Hindu doing this.

Psychologically speaking, It is all in perception - when u observe something you perceive it in a certain context - you tend to reinforce the thought and believe in your reality and show others how to perceive the way you did it.

I don't know this guy - but did he come to India to study only the head movements of Hindus?

Did he perceive their body language as a whole or only neck upwards? may be if he saw the entire body language the neck movement would be explainable.

Did he perceive them in only a certain situation such as a temple singing 'bhajans' or hymns?

did he bother to observe Indians of other religions regarding the same movement and doing a comparitive study?

Did he study Hindus from all regions of India or was he region specific?

Unless all these are answered we'll never know the real answer

During high school and college, I knew many folks from India who were Hindus, but NONE of them shook their heads in any fashion, when they spoke. And now that I'm an adult, living in Silicon Valley here in Northern California, I see a LOT of people from India, since many of them are drawn here for computer and engineering type high-tech jobs. And I've never seen any of them shake their heads either!

I've never seen the Michael Palin show you're talking about; what was it exactly? A documentary? Are you sure it wasn't some comedy sketch or spoof-type show? Something Monty Python-esque? I dunno.... it just doesn't seem right that someone like Palin would make such an unfair, mocking remark in an attempt to pigeonhole Hindus from India. I didn't think he was a prejudiced person. :(

I also know a few, who always look like they are confused. I think it is a persona they pick up and use as a bit of defense against people's expectations. Friends I met in Europe, still speak and write like they are fresh from the boat outta Russia, and call you comrade...even though they have lived here for the last decade and have complete their study of engineering at the university. A defense. Final answer.
