Hinduism believes that there is all possibilities to blossom divinity in any human. Any human can reach to the supreme state of enlightenment. Unlike other religion it encourages even people who does not believe in God !! (Story says Valmiki was very bad person before he got knowledge) Even if there is a smallest spark of divinity found in any human being, we admire and appreciate. This gesture helps in inspiring others to walk the path.

I don't advocate blind-trust. But please dare to test the divinity. Divinity is willingly ready to pass all your doubts. (I have my personal experiences in this life) Are you ready to test the grace of divinity ? To respect that divinity is never foolish.

Let me go a little ahead in this topic. This oldest religion is encompassing every aspect of life - To me Hindu traditions are found to be the most intelligent. Whether putting Kumkum or chandan tika on forehead or may be worshiping animals and perticular trees. Shri Ram can be Maryada Purush and Shri Krishna can break all the laws. Every custom is created to attend various attributes of life. We just need to understand the logic behind it.

One just need to take little pain to rediscover the logic behind it. Just getting feet wet at sea shore will never give you idea about the depth of the ocean. I suggest, please go little deeper in the theory of Hindu customs. Your intelligence will certainly find out "Why" and "How" correct yet simple it is and also how unfortunately over a period of time has it became mechanical practice and now seems illogical.

It is always necessary to rediscover this knowledge generations by generations otherwise it will lose the truth behind it.

I am not clear on your question, are you sure they do not worship human living instead of living human? I always thought Hindus living was for the spiritual life and the Love of their people. I have seen in many cultures(even our own) the licking and the practice of washing ones feet is very common. Humanity continues, I would rather wash a man's feet then shoot him in the head.
The women/men do not believe they are clean until after the menstrual cycle has past and they bathe. They truly believe believe believe cleanliness is important to God.

It's a formality, like why do people kiss the Popes ring? Just another song and dance in the name of faith.
