You should have been given aftercare instructions when you were discharged from the hospital. If I were you, Id call your surgeons office and ask them this question and also ask for specific and detailed instructions.

When I had a major surgery 2 years ago... I was given instructions, but I also never hesitated to call my surgeon's office to ask additional questions or bring up concerns.

Do not change the bandage unless the doc told you to change it. Read the papers you got when you were discharged as they should give you instrustions on what to do after surgery. Also peroxide is no longer recommended for wound cleaning unless you really dilute it. Normal saline or plain soap and water are the recommended cleaning agents.

The nurse that discharged you should have given you detailed instructions for after care of your surgery. I would not put peroxide on the wound because it is harsh and will dry it out excessively. Change the dressing daily or as needed due to drainage. Keep it clean and dry, if the nurse gave you any neosporin or other antibiotic cream apply that when you clean and change your dressing. Call the facility that did you surgery and ask them for a print out of your after care instructions. Take care!

I've always heard that peroxide is not good for deep wounds, and in fact can do more harm than good. Maybe you should try iodine instead, or antibacterial cream.

You only use it if the doctor ordered it. Didn't you get a care sheet from either the doctor or the nurse? If so, follow the directions. If not, then cal your doctor's office and ask how they want you to do the after care.

Usually it's up to the dr to change the bandage and put meds on it. Don't do anything unless he told you to.
