You cannot repair the disk that holds the same operating system that the system was booted from.

Boot your windows XP CD and run the first Repair.

When you get the console prompt type in CHKDSK /F

Microsoft suggests a few fixes:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823439
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176504

If you're using a program called spyware doctor, remove it and try chkdsk again.

The chkdsk "'Cannot open volume for direct access" problem can also be caused by Symantec AutoProtect (part of Norton AntiVirus) being set to run at "System Start" rather than at "Symantec AntiVirus start" in some corporate versions of Symantec AntiVirus and in the newer versions of Norton AntiVirus, the consumer product.

You could also try a chkdsk in safe mode (F8 after POST)
