Ashamed of myself for thinking what exactly? That I find it distressing that at this time of year many puppies are just dumped by irresponsible owners because the novelty has worn off?

No one is going to admit openly to this...but do a survey in September & see how many no longer have their former 'darling' because it 'chewed the kid's toys & carpet' (no crate was ever used) 'was too hyper' (was never taken on regular walks or exercised) 'nipped the children & growled at us when we tried to get it off the couch' (never went to one obedience class). Those of us who are more experienced with pets (work for vets, shelters or rescues) know what will REALLY happen to many Christmas pups...sigh.

I think its disgusting that people buy puppies as Xmas presents. i work for the leading pet supplier in the UK and it makes me so angry that people do this. over the last few weeks i have seen people buy for their new puppies, some obviously have done their homework and buy exactly what they need, but so many people try to skimp on it and buy the cheap ta because they're not really interested in the dog, its just a toy to them and that makes me so mad. Puppies are living, breathing animals who have as much right as any of us to a decent life, but there are still too many stupid, thickheaded people who think, aah, cute, lets get one, without thinking that on average a dog costs £282 a year, and that's just the basics. Its no wonder that with these idiots around, we still end up with over 2,000 dogs dumped every year in January alone. Everyone getting a dog should be thoroughly checked out before being allowed to have a dog

I didn't get a puppy for Christmas but last year I got a kitten & a year later we are both lying on our backs wishing we'd hadn't eaten so much. Not everyone is responsible and gets a pet for the season only although too many do it year after year. I don't understand why you are allowed to buy them in December - surly if you want the animal that much you will wait till the New Year if anyone should be amshamed of themselves its the shelters who say in one breathe "a pet is for life not for Christmas" and in the other breathe says "come and get your puppy/kitten/hamster etc they make great pets and presents!

Well, if you think you cant commit yourself to that animal for the next 15 or 16 years, then you'd best take your puppy down to the local RSPCA office and hand him in, too many puppies get dumped by irresponsible people a couple of weeks after Christmas because they've eaten the TV remote or they've peed the floor or you get fed up taking it out for walks, all very well having a dog, but if you haven't got what it takes to care for the dog, then you shouldn't have it!

Yes, I would like to know the same thing...a very good question!!
A kid begs for a dog, the parents get one from the PET STORE-wrong!!, and then the puppy has health issues and is "just too much to handle!!" I am sure this is the excuse I will hear before January is over with. Probably an adorable little Aussie puppy or two, a Jack Russell Terrier who needs more room, and the list goes on and on and on...

Blah blah blah.

I got a puppy for my anniversary 2 months ago in October that kind of doubled as a christmas gift. The "novelty" hasn't worn off and I doubt it will I made a lot of changes to my lifestyle and my life for the puppy and end the end she's a great addition to my family (2 female dogs and myself...nothing like a girl house....my boyfriend is outnumbered 3 to 1). As for my older dog who doubled as a birthday gift 2 years ago she's still my baby. 2 years later, three states later, many apartments later and one boyfriend later she's my best friend and my baby. As they say a dog is for a long period of time during your lifetime. I couldn't imagine these past two months without her and the past 2 years without my older dog.

Dogs are very costly and I myself had to make sacrifices to make sure my 2 dogs got what they needed in love, care, time, and in return I got unconditional love and lots of doggie kisses for it and that's what made the sacrifices worthwhile.

I also want to add that I have voluteered @ an animal shelter and I have seen what happens to dogs that are "unwanted" due to a new baby, moving, christmas present that no one wants after 3 months due to being costly or too much time and energy. It's quite sad, people fail to realize that what they do effects other people. For example living in Boston is one of the worse places @ times to have a dog because so many people move from apartment to apartment and when they find a place they like and it states "no pets allowed" the first thing to go is of course the animal. (A lot of time there is no place to walk a dog in the city or landlord feels that a dog will tear up their beautiful apartment or condo) Or a college student comes in to go to school and adopts a pet out and realizes that they can no longer have it because of their school or the fact they want to move elsewhere the dog goes back to the shelter or if the dog is bought from a breeder goes into the shelter. So when a person like myself rents an apartment has a good background of moving around state to state and make sure to bring my dog with me and how much money I put into vet bills and emergency vet bills they shelter doesn't see that, but sees my age and it doesn't fit their age requirement because the people my age already ruined it for me because of their irresponsible activity. Luckily someone told me to look outside the city of Boston and @ other animal shelters and I did which I'm glad I did because I was able to adopt a beautiful puppy that I have had for 2 months (read above) and I also was so greatful that they did not just look @ my age and what I do that I owe them and I donated something off their wishlist and will continue to do so yearly.

I wish I'd have gotten a puppy for Christmas but did'nt.
I already have 2 german shepherds but there's always room for more to be loved and spoiled rotten. One of my shepherds thinks every pup he sees is his anyway so anyone thinking of dumping a poor defenseless puppy just needs to put it inside our fence. We know what to do with it!!!!!!!!!!!
