Have Emachines OEM recover CD, but I do not want to re-format and lose all data. If I could get to the Restore feature I could restore computer functions. Have no floppy drive available to make re-boot disks.

I'm not a techie, but had the same problem. I had to take it to the techs, and they reformatted. It is a pain in the drain, but it's the only way that I know of.

You could try starting in Safe Mode if you haven't tried that yet. Before the Windows startup screen, hold down the F8 button and choose Safe Mode.
If you have a restore app you can restore from there but sometimes if you start in Safe it'll correct the problem and start the next time.
I have my fingers crossed for you.

Have you tried going in through Safe Mode?
Turn your PC off.
Turn it on -- immediately press and hold the F8 key until you come to a menu where you will choose Safe Mode.

Now, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, System Restore.

See if you can restore to an earlier time from here.

Restart. (Your icons will probably be all over the place. Just drag them back.)

i think of the likely issues that it must be are as follows: a million) undesirable replica of XP. i could go away getting a clean replica for a later step, given the cost. 2) undesirable capability furnish. while capability factors start to weaken, the capacitors can no longer manage the capability demands on your gadget, overheats and shuts down. i could the two get a technician to verify this as achievable, or get a capability furnish tester ($10-$20 at a working laptop or computing device furnish shop). 3) no longer uncomplicated force is failing. in case you have broken sectors on your no longer uncomplicated force, it ought to reason your computing device to close down. in basic terms replace it with a clean force. 4) must be that your RAM is undesirable. in case you have greater desirable than one stick of RAM on your computing device attempt removing them separately and then changing them separately, rebooting between each RAM stick you get rid of(till none are left to get rid of). And reboot between each stick you replace. (be certain you floor your self appropriate, with the computing device unplugged, and touch the steel case faraway from the motherboard). If that's the subject, your computing device will stop behaving badly as quickly as the undesirable stick is out. If this sounds slightly previous what you sense you're able to do, you could take it in to a provider midsection and have the subject fixed. wish this replaced into powerful.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
