I am using RCA connectors (headphone jack, 1/8" i think, converted into two male outs). I tried 'digital out' and the headphone jack as well.

OK, just so everyone knows, I am a very technical person, I checked the connection before I asked the question. The cables are brand new and I am using a Creative Sound Blaster Media Card. The noise sounds like something's not grounded, but how would you ground something like that?

You might possibly have a loose wire or short somewhere in the wires and or inlet plug in your PC. Also it might be some other electrical device such as a cell phone or radio that you have plugged in or is just in the same area that the signal of the device is cause the buzzing or distortion in your speakers. You can also try using the gold RCA connectors versus silver, which will generally give you a better connection with less noise and static interference.

Edit: What is the speaker wires sitting on, is it a metal type table or are they next to something that will conduct energy like metal. Try moving wires away from the area and use the plastic or rubber wire holder wraps to keep them from grounding. Also don't have anything sitting on top of the wires, such as don't try to hide the wires by placing uneath the pc.

Sometimes buzzing means a loose connection. Check to see that they're pushed all the way in.

Sounds like a ground wire isn't connected.

It sound like you're picking up interference from somewhere, possibly your computer or monitor. Try using a shorter cable.
