I am a single mother who'd just returning to work in an office(I'm a programmer). My son is 6 months old. There's someone I would like to sponsor as a nanny from Colombia...I've known her for many years ad know sh would take excellent care of my son. How would I legally sponsor her to take care of my son?

Thanks!

I just wanted to add a comment: while I am sure there are many people who are qualified to watch my son in the US, the is a lady I have known for many years and trust completely. Would you want to hire a stranger to watch your children if you could help it??

I want to hire her because I trust her - and I'll pay her more because of that! Asking if I just want to pay her less is sad and insulting.

We consular officers get this request often, and the answer is sorry, but no. There is no non-immigrant or immigrant visa type for this kind of worker. The J-1 au pair programs that someone else suggested are usually not available for adults who want to work for more than a summer.

Unfortunately, you will have to find someone who is already legally in the US.

Are there no Americans that are good enough to take care of your son...or is it that you can just pay her crap?

I think that there are plenty of in home care providers right here in the United States...I was one while I was in college.

I was a 'nanny' for about 3 years for a family.

EDIT: We have enough people entering our country and doing work that a United States citizen would be more than happy to do. To me...you are just another person importing someone from another country to do a job. Do you not think that someone here would like that opportunity?

It's ok...maybe one day YOUR job will be filled by someone from another country. It's ok...I am sure that they just like the person and feel comfortable with them.

I think she has to be in this program were she becomes a nanny with permission from the state... Yeah Colombia people are nice... my aunt is from there... I understand that your baby being with someone you know and trust is better than with a stranger..

Why hire a Colombian when there are by so many, by your own admission, qualified people to fulfill the job- and most likely with superior education and English skills.
Sounds to me like another immigration rort,

Ask immigration. There are au pair services that help you, but they supply the people. If you have someone in mind, you will have to do all of the work yourself.

However, I agree that college students are great for this. That is who my brother and his wife hired when she went back to work. However, I know that when it is your kids and your home you want someone you are really comfortable with.

hire an American. we already have to many illegals here. if you don't get to know an American nanny you will never find the best one. this i can not help you with. if they are not American you don't need a nanny. ask your mom to help you. that would be the best choice in my book.
