My sister-in-law sets a chair for her hound to sit and join us for dinner. How rude! I've left the table but, haven't said anything. Others don't like it but, stay and eat.

ahhh yes, the pet guardian that treats the dog like the child and not as the dog.

I actually have experience with this, believe it or not. I dated a guy who has two tiny dogs that he talks to like they are 4 year olds needing to be talked to from dad. This guy has allowed bad manners with his dogs for so long that the dogs do not believe they are dogs any longer and have been transformed into odd shaped people. His dogs eat human food (which is not good for them) and are constantly under foot begging and making me feel awkward for saying no and he never even said a word on his own to discourage the matter, thinking it was perfectly normal. I hated that.

your sister in law, no doubt, has a few ideas of her own that are not condusive to discipline. I bet the dogs rule the house and not the owners. Dogs, regardless of breed, are pack animals not minuture humans with four legs. The guardians are the Alphas and never the other way around. This action of dining with pets and guests is rude, it is undisciplined, and it is quite an eccentric attitude to have with guests.

Personally, me? I would have been the witch that spoke up and stated right then and there, that I would not be made to sit next to the dog. Perhaps the dog would be better suited outside during the meal. I know, I'm rude like that. But I do not believe you did that at the first meal.

So you have two options now.....1 don't go back and 2 let her know that you were not excited about the dog begging at the table.

She might be insulted by either option, but your brother in law should have had a clue that the rest of the family would not enjoy the meal as was and should have said something but he didn't. I'm affraid your only future option will be to politely suggesst you were not happy with the matter and perhaps it should change if the next dinner happens there next year.

After more than thirty years as a multiple- dog owner, and knowing hundreds of other dog owners over that time, I assure you the overwhelming majority of dog owners do NOT allow their pooch to jump up on the dining table. But when you went on to say your sister-in-law sets a chair for her hound to sit and join the human diners, I guess that is what you meant -sit AT the table, not "jump up on" the table. All the dog owners I've known whose animals were very much part of the family, felt like me - that they wouldn't be happy spending a day without the company of their beloved "hairy ones" But, when you choose to bring others into your home, you've got an obligation to respect their personal feelings too, and no matter what kind of interraction you have with your dogs when there's no company present, it needs to be temporarily suspended, where anybody with half a brain would realise that it might make guests very uncomfortable. All credit to your sister-in-law that she loves her dog, but she's got to be a bit "thick" not to know that dinner guests just don't want to sit at the table with a dog Schlurrrp-Schlurrrping off a plate alongside them. LOL

You _might_ be a redneck...

But seriously, it sounds like your sister in law is really into her dog, my psychic powers tell me that she has no children.

I've had my dogs sit and eat from the table - at a picnic for a joke or a photo op. I do insist on manners, no paws on the table, food stays on the plate, no browsing your neighbors plate - but I would NEVER dream of doing this at a sit down holiday dinner. If I did have the poor taste to do so, I would immediately cease if it made any of my guests uncomfortable.

As I see it, you've got choices here. You could tell her you don't like it and would prefer to not be invited if the dog will be joining you or you could find a seat not next to the dog and ignore it.

I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but it seriously sounds like she has psychological issues and needs mental help asap. She must have an abusive past and/or mistrust of humans, and being that dogs "can't talk back" she worships them and holds them higher than people (she clearly didn't care about offending anyone, even you after you left the table).

You should talk with your other family members about getting her help because if it's this bad now, can you imagine when she's old? If they don't have children now (I'm taking a wild guess that they don't) she will put the dogs before children. I've read too many horrible stories about parents who put the animals first even with they nip at, bite, and injure the kids Some kids have even died before because the stupid owners put the dogs first. It's a mental issue and they need help.

Sitting ON A CHAIR and sitting on the table is a big difference. BUT if no one makes a fuss then she has no reason to change.

I do not allow our dogs or cats near the table when guests are present due to simple meal etiquette. Print your question out and show here all the answers here. If nothing is ever said there there is nothing further to complain about.

Because the dog is her kid. She wants her kid to join in. I know, that is silly. Just talk to her.

I used to have a dog; and I wouldn't do that to my guests. Mind you - my dog is a clean dog - not like your typical dogs where owners don't even wash their butts when they did their business. That's how dogs get worm you know, from cleaning their own butts. And to think of letting a dog licks your face? No, no, no.

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs.

Some people would pet the dog and then pick up something to eat from that same hand (not even washing it!). Hmmm! I wonder how they do the cooking? I'm not eating at their place.

People go overboard, treating their dogs like children. I love my dog, but would never think of setting him a place at the table.
