My sister-in-law sets a chair for her hound to sit and join us for dinner. How rude! I've left the table but, haven't said anything. Others don't like it but, stay and eat.

I think you mean 'why do some dog owners'
My dogs don't even come in the same room we are eating in, be it dinner, a bowl of ice cream, or my wife. They have never tasted food other than dog food and milk bones, and are not even interested in any food we have. (I can leave a sandwich on the coffee table, go to work, and it is still there when I come home eight and a half hours later)
Other owners, I can't answer for, but I agree with you, it is disgusting. Another bad one is the dogs that sit there and drool, beg and whine whenever they see you with food.
It's all a case of poor training, and not caring enough about your pet to only feed him food that is good for him.

After more than thirty years as a multiple- dog owner, and knowing hundreds of other dog owners over that time, I assure you the overwhelming majority of dog owners do NOT allow their pooch to jump up on the dining table. But when you went on to say your sister-in-law sets a chair for her hound to sit and join the human diners, I guess that is what you meant -sit AT the table, not "jump up on" the table.
All the dog owners I've known whose animals were very much part of the family, felt like me - that they wouldn't be happy spending a day without the company of their beloved "hairy ones" But, when you choose to bring others into your home, you've got an obligation to respect their personal feelings too, and no matter what kind of interraction you have with your dogs when there's no company present, it needs to be temporarily suspended, where anybody with half a brain would realise that it might make guests very uncomfortable.
All credit to your sister-in-law that she loves her dog, but she's got to be a bit "thick" not to know that dinner guests just don't want to sit at the table with a dog Schlurrrp-Schlurrrping off a plate alongside them. LOL

ARGH - I wouldn't like that either. Particularly if the dog did actually go up ON the table. some people just think of their dogs as part of the family. But of course not everyone feels ok with that.

Does she do it only at her own home? If that's the case suggest that you meet elsewhere - don't eat at her home. Go to a restaurant or Invite them to your home (without the dog) If they ask why tell them you love their company but you are uncomfortable eating with a dog.

Best of luck to you.

I personally don't like the idea, but it's her house and her rules. The good thing is you don't have to eat there. Maybe you could politely tell her that you find it unsanitary.
What bothers me is , if she lets the pet do that, how do you know she isn't letting the pet eat of the dishes she's serving you with?
Some people treat their pets like humans and do not realize that everyone else does not share the same view.
I know people who let their cats walk or even sit on the counter tops!!! They're preparing food on these same surfaces.
I love my Chi--but when comes down to it--he's a DOG.

Not all dog owners allow that type of behavior. I do have to question a person mentality that would allow this from their pets. When company is over for dinner. pets should be placed somewhere that they will not offend anyone.

Sorry, but that is just pathetic! My dogs are a part of my family they are the canine part and do not belong in a chair at the table...

You should have put this into Society-> Etiquette

This is an issue of etiquette, and she's failing at it. Maybe tell her you don't like smelling dog while you're eating will get the point across.

Some people go over board with their dogs when they treat the dog as one of their children.

Some people like dogs more than they like people.
I understand why at times...

If you haven't noticed, some people treat their pets as if they're their children...

You know, the ones that have a zillion outfits for their pet, carry them in those dog carrier/purse things or walk them in a stroller.
