NTFS stands for New Technology File System and was introduced with Windows 2000. A computer running Pre NTFS can not read a NTFS file, however a computer running something previous (such as fat or fat32) is possible since windows 2000, and xp are backwards compabible.

NTFS gives you more usable space than the old FAT 32 system because the clusters are much smaller. All it takes is one bit from a file to have to go into another cluster because the one it is in is full and you lose that whole cluster for anything else. I forget the exact size of the clusters but say the FAT 32 is 56K bytes and you use 1 byte in a cluster, all the rest of that space can only be used by the file that put the byte in it. The NTFS system uses much smaller clusters, hence a byte or so in another cluster doesn't waste as much space.

NT File System. I'm not sure what the NT means, but NTFS would be what kind of file system is on your computer. I believe theres that and another file system is called FAT but I don't know what it means.
