If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

For system restore to work you have to set restore points. Once a month with your defrag is a good rule of thumb. Even then you should be able to roll it back to day one.

If you use windows, you could use the Microsoft Live OneCare Cleanup scan, which scans and cleans the registry and sets restore points. Defragging the hard disk will also do that.
