To be very simple a diode is an electronic device that allows current flow in only one direction.
Think of a diode alot like you would think of a v shaped valve. Flow can go in one direction but not back in the other.
There are many types of diodes one of the most popular being LED (light emitting diodes) which are used in many types of indicator lighting insturments. A LED works by exciting electrons to higher energy levels and then when those excited electrons fall in energy levels light is given off.
