no butter? I've never heard of oatmeal cookies with no butter or crisco or something.

make sure you are letting the cookie sheets cool before you reuse them. a hot cookie sheet will melt the dough, before the cookies start to bake, causing the cookies to be too flat. However, if you're using no butter or crisco, I wouldn't think they'd melt. so I don't know.

Oh boy - have I been trying to figure this one out myself! I followed the back of the Nestle chip bag and they turned out like pancakes. It turns out that they just needed more flour! I added about another 1/3 to 1/2 cup of flour to the batch (even after the chips were already in there) and they turned out wonderfully: Firm, round, and slightly puffed yet still chewy. I have learned that batter consistency is the best way to tell how they will turn out: if the batter sticks alot to your fingers as you are trying to spoon them onto the sheet then they need more flour. With the right amount of flour, the batter should come off the spoon and your fingers easily- yet not crumble.

You are refering to what is known as "spread" Did you use butter? Shortening holds shape better, but butter has better flavor. You can also use a little of both. To save your current recipe you may want to add a little flour, referidgerate the dough and/or cook at a little higher temp. All will help limit the spreading.

One thing the recipe probably was refridgerate the dough before you put in on the pan in into the oven, warm (room temp) dough will spread quickly, what I do is to roll dough into balls, cool them down and work fast and put the balls on the sheet and into the oven, try it, you'll see, it's just like sugar cookies

Make sure your baking powder is fresh, otherwise some cookies just come out that way, but are still delicious. Good luck!
