Learn what you can about the world and share what you know. Help the poor not by giving out free stuff, although food will get their attention, but teaching them how to improve their lot.
For instance, building better housing relies more on muscle and know-how than government. Growing miniature food crops like alfa sprouts and bean sprouts is cheap and easy and taught in one easy lesson. In some parts of the world they grow guinea pigs for food. Learn about it and teach that in other parts of the world. Teach people to innovate.
Most of all, teach people the value of education. We cannot have democracy without literacy. That's why Iraq is failing. That's why insurgents are attacking educational institutions. They don't want literacy. That's why the Taliban attacks schools.

To know yourself and with that realization exercise compassion when you are able.
All starts with yourself and your world.
You COULD start a religion or try for pope but if your not looking for praise but to serve Humanity,the close are what you got.
Compassion is a skill and NOT a joke or not a skill but whats room for when your own owls are not clogging the 'you'.

"how can i serve this situation"
consider joining the peace corps,
becoming a doctor in a place were people really need that.
consider donating to a charity that really helps
(heifer international and world neighbors are good ones)
work for justice, equity and compassion.
study the life of peace pilgrim.
mahatma ghandi, mother teresa, mohammed unis and others
who have helped humanity.
your goal is a lifelong process. and a great life goal.
