What's recommended by most places is crap.
6 months, chicky. Wait until it is entirely healed, which could be more than the six months *i've had mine done twice on top, twice on bottom. aside from the one time the piercer screwed up with a bar that was way short, none of them ever healed because i'm a "do as i say not as i do" kinda person and went on changing the bar overy other week*
Anyone that says that you should change ANY piercing in a matter of weeks *ears and tongue included, despite popular beleif* is telling you wrong. Give it a chance to heal, if you don't it never will. Trust me on this one.
EDIT
Sorry, I noticed everyone's saying to change the ends. Don't. It'll pull on the piercing, and even though you won't necisarrily feel pain from it, you'll tear it slightly every time. Leave it alone, only touching it to clean it. And bactine... that's goopy, right? Like neosporin, it'll clog the holes, and clogging means it can't drain. Seasalt soaks are all you need, 1/8-1/4 tsp to every 8oz of water, a little warm but not hot.
Oh, and sit up straight, all the time. Again with the pulling and tiny tears that will not only delay the healing, but will cause it to migrate, if not reject.

mine was about 3 months.. but you can go in the next week and have them "downsize" the jewelry for you. which means putting in a smaller piece of jewlry since most of the swellign should have gone done by then.. Im not entirley sire. when i got a few cartilage piercings. i asked them to downsize it for me (that was a few months ago) and im glad i didnt do it on my own. my navel piercing is 6 months old. i took it out yesterday just to see what it looked liek (it looks gross lolol) and i had such a hard time gettign it back in!) my navel isnt filly healed yetsince it is still crusting the jewelry up a bit.. you soudl go and have them change it again.. but 6 weeks sounds to soon. do not attempt to change it by yourself...
oh yeah i remember they told me 3 months! cause when i was picking out the jewelry they said "better pick out somerthing you'll liek cause you wont be able to change it for 3 months"

When i got mine done they said to wait for 6 weeks. I changed my balls but didnt change my bar until that 6th week. I would seriously wait the 6 weeks so that you dont have any problems with it!

I'd wait a good 2 almost 3 months, and make sure its a good metal and not that **** they sell at claires, dont change it too frequently because it will get infected.

they say six weeks but if you can get away with longer its better just don make a habit of frequently changing it for the first year its easier to get infected the more you handle it

6 weeks is the minimum. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, you can always go see your piercer and ask him/her to change it for you the first time.

if i am not mistaken it is 6months. one of my friends has one that she got in august.if you want to change it you can just change the ends of it instead of changing the bar... that is what she does.
