I was an alcoholic for over 30 years. I didn't turn to AA. I turned to Jesus 5 years ago. I haven't even wanted a taste of alcohol since.

From my own personal experience i was abstaining from alcohol for over two years with the help of my higher power, and aa.
However, after an experience which was so devastating to me i was unable to cope with the meetings and they seemed to make me more depressed listening to the shares and i stopped attending.
And guess what? I was back on beer again after six months of non atrtendance.
As much as i want to give up i need to have the strength from my higher power as i cannot do it alone, but at present i continue to have a tipple.
The other thing is what determines an alcoholic?
Most people i know do not think i am one at all, but going by the aa questions then i am.
Hope this answer isn't too long but it is a personal thing.

It depends upon what you mean by "works". It is the most effective way we have available now to help alcohol addicts break away from daily abuse of alcohol. It DOES NOT cure alcoholism, though. An alcoholic will be an alcoholic for a lifetime. The alcoholic will battle against their alcoholism for a lifetime. That's why so many "fall off the wagon" and find themselves back in AA over and over.
Ultimately, I think a combination of AA and a true commitment to Christ works best.

AA works, it is the people you know that dont let it. I have been sober for almost 4 years now. I do what is suggested in the program. yes there are people who just cant get it. I see them all the time. AA gives out chips for various Lengths of sobriety. It is suggested that if you have one of these chips and you decide to drink, that you destroy the chip, and disassociate yourself with AA. Come back and pick another chip up IF you make it back.

It's difficult to pin down an exact figure, but the estimated success rate for those who attend AA meetings is between 5 and 10%. One of the biggest problems with the program is that it teaches people that their addiction is a disease, and not a CHOICE.

I was in and out of programs for 5 years none of them worked. Because I did not want them to work. I have 17 years sober now. Yes AA works if you work it. A person has to be sick and tired of being sick and tired to really do it, And a person cant do it for any person or reason except for ones self. Drinking problem No not me. I drink. I get drunk . I fall down, no problem. Smiles

AA helps a person identify there problem but it wont set them free from there problem the way Jesus Christ can
John 8:32 Then you will know the truth and the truth will MAKE you free.
If you take the town drunk and put him in jail for the weekend then set him free all you did was set him free for the day but you didn't deal with his condition ,Jesus can make this man free where he has no problem with it no more .

Yes, there is proof that AA works. However, AA is not the only way. There are many other paths. To say it is better than any other path would be a disservice to AA itself.

Commitment/Dedication/Desire to Change work. This may or may not include AA. This is "core" stuff that can be enhanced via a group but ultimately it comes from inner determination.

we have a God-shaped hole in our spirit that can only be filled by Him.
those who attend AA, come to a realization that there is a Higher Power, and seek out that Power and find Christ, they are the ones who recover
AA is not a cure, in fact drinking is a band-aid covering other problems a person has.
a AA does is rip off that band-aid. once it is gone, you must go to the Great Healer to be healed, that is Jesus Christ
