My son's oncologist recommended that he not eat 'rare' (red) meats because of the problems associated with bacteria or other diseases. He still eats meat but makes sure that is cooked to thoroughly to insure that any germs or bacteria present are killed. The reason behind this is that cancer patients often have a compromised immunce system due to disease or to treatment. With a compromised immune system it is more difficult to fight off infections caused by bacteria. Also if a patient gets sick it can delay scheduled treatment. It is critical for cancer patients to remain as healthy as possible while undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. Long delays caused by infections can become life threatening if the cancer starts growing during this time period.

There are lots of studies linking red meat consumption to colon and breast cancer. Other studies have not found this link. It's likely that each doctor has their own opinion, based on the research they've read. There are many other sources of protein if your doctor thinks you should avoid red meat, ask for a referral to a dietitian if you need some ideas.

Was it a physician said this? In any case, everyone has an opinion on what to do/not do. Especially if an illness is life threatening. Many people have many reasons for not eating red meat, and yet it is still very popular.

I've never heard of this. My dad had multiple myeloma and he wasn't told to stop eating red meats. Maybe it's just certain types of cancer??
