how many people now or when they were young wanted to be dentists or work in dentistry and why?

First, you need to volunteer in an office to handle odds and ends and to observe the dentist. This is really the only way you'll be able to tell if it's for you. I originally wanted to be a pediatrician, but the lifestyle of sleeping with a pager under my pillow did not appeal to me (I had to spend some time with a pediatrician to figure this out, too). The dental profession in the U.S. still has control over itself. The insurance companies and malpractice premiums have not taken over the profession as they have done in medicine. Being a dentist is a GREAT melting pot of science and art. You can help people and get paid very well for it. I've been doing dentistry for 7 years, and after some VERY intense growing pains (mostly in dental school and residency) I couldn't be happier doing it for a living. I hope this helps.

There will be an increased need for dentists across the board, because fewer dentists are graduating each year than are retiring. There are already major shortages in rural areas, because most dentists don't want to relocate there. Everything will be 'hot.' There will be a greater need for geriatric dentistry as America continues to "gray." People are keeping more of their teeth longer than before, so they'll need dentist long into their later years. I currently work for a clinic that offers indigent care, but we're catching a lot of flak from the local pedodontist. Dude, chill out! You don't accept Medicaid so BTFU!

My dad was a dentist and I always used to hang out in his office and I got a sense of how he helped people. I wanted to be a dentist from the time I was 5 or 6 years old. I never even wanted to be a cowboy or a fireman. Over the years, I did not abandon this childhood wish, because as I learned more and more about the profession, it seemed to match my artistic abilities and the desire to help people.

I was a full time dental assistant and now fill in when needed.
I went to school to assist b/c the field really interested me.
I fell in love w/ assisting b/c of the great dentist I worked for and the people I worked with. The hours are great. Having knowledge that can really help people is great. Educating patients who may otherwise not know basic oral hygiene beyond brushing is great. Assisting in complex procedures is great and makes you feel both needed and like you're a part of something that's major for someone. You work hard, but it's not hard work. Not for me anyway. I love it. I love my patients and the look on their face when you help make their smile "pretty" again!! Or when you help get rid of that horrible pain!
Merry Christmas!

Dentistry is a very filling occupation. How ever there are times when it can be like pulling teeth. If I did not have epilepsy, I would probably be a dentist.

I work as a dental nurse and have done since 1998.
It wasn't my choice of job but on leaving school I had gone around to most of the local business's and asked if any jobs vacant.
A few years later they had a vacancy and had remembered my name. I got the job and have been there ever since...I even took a year out abroad and then was re-employed by my the same surgeon on my return.
I love my job and I like to create a friendly relaxed atmosphere as I know that so any really find it hard to cope with. Seeing nervous patients get better at coping really boosts me and makes my job even more enjoyable.
