Does injecting air into a persons veins really cause them to die, and if so, why is this not used in place of lethal injections?

This is sort of a myth, with some exceptions. I remember as a kid hearing that a single bubble of air would kill you. This is simply not the case. A small bubble in your vein is not harmful. Now if you send a large bubble of air back to your heart, you create an air embolism. Air takes up space and in an enclosed area, like a blood vessel it can get lodged and can prevent blood getting past it. Even then it may not kill you, but it could cause an infarct (lack of blood/O2 supply causing cellular death)

This is true, I think the reason it isn't used in lethal injection is because it is not painless or all that reliable. You might just end up with a slightly inflated person yelling and screaming, until the eventual "Boom",splat!

Yes, it does cause someone to die, it throws their heart off rhythm. They wouldn't do it because they would probably say it is inhumane, even though they are ruthless killers, and they don't deserve to be treated humanly.

Yes, but it takes a good bit and is a very nasty way to go.

We're weird in America. We want to kill people, but we can't do it cruelly or unusually.
