You will have the best luck with finding unique rings through an independent jeweler. That means a store not affiliated with any chain, where the store is either owned by an educated, certified jeweler (goldsmith, diamond specialist etc) or employs one that works exclusively in their store.

In order to compete with the chains, they will stock things that are out of the ordinary and they will be able to custom design and craft a piece or modify a stock piece depending on your budget and taste.

You will probably find working directly with a jeweler very rewarding. They want to make a happy, returning customer and their livelihood is tied to their success in doing that instead of ringing up the biggest sale today. I have found that they are more expensive than the chains on plain, heavily advertised "me too" jewelry but much less expensive on unusual and unique pieces. Not to mention that the quality will be significantly better.

Good Luck, and best wishes!

We bought my engagement ring through a jewelry store, but it is an estate piece. Buying through a jewelry store had the benefit of having already been appraised. Because it was an estate piece and the store was looking to unload it, the setting cost us only $75 for what would otherwise cost several hundred dollars.

If you want truly unique rings, don't shop the jewlers in store stock -- have them custom made.

Find someone who does custom designs. There are several in every town. That way, you can work with them and get what you want.
