I would rather not use a ton of hair spray. I've used steam rollers before, and that works reasonably well, but the curls usually fall out after about 3 hours. Should I put gel on wet, clean hair and then use steam rollers?

I don't like the way curling irons burn my hair. I've used steam curlers before, and they work pretty well but the curls always fall out after about 3 hours. I hate using a ton of gel or hairspray, because then my hair feels stiff... what's the fun in having pretty hair if you can't touch it? I've also slept with my hair tied in rags, which works well, but it's hard to sleep that way!
Sleeping in a twist or a bun is ok, but the curls tend to be a little raggedy looking, and using braids just makes my hair look frizzy or strange. I'd love long-lasting thick curls, but don't know how to do it.... sigh!

Seriously, "scrunching" my hair doesn't do anything, because it has no natural curl. Using shampoo or other products for curly hair doesn't do anything... you need curl, first. :) I'd really like to hear from people with thick, very straight hair who have had some success with getting their hair to hold curls for special occasions. I don't mean lots and lots of little curls like a perm - no. Any sort of nice curls and waves would be great! Hairspray doesn't do it, and I hate hairspray anyway - makes my hair feel unnatural and stiff.

Honey, For us both being blondes, its "RARE" for us to have thick hair, according to all of the Beautician's I've been too, anyway.. As for keeping a curl in your hair, at night, I usually put my hair in a twist, so it doesn't get all broken-up, while I'm sleeping, and in the A.Ms I'll take out the scrungy, and my hair will have the prettiest wavy curl to it....... But, for when I've curled it, I would just have a cup of warm water to just wet it a tad, and then put the curlers in, and VWALLAA!!!! Hopefully this will work for you too!! Try both ways, when I wrap my hair in the twist at nights, I just simply put my head upside down, and twist gentle in a spiral, until my hair becomes like in a bun, then put the scrungy on around it, and the next morning its all wavy and curly in some parts, its pretty cool, try that one too!!! Good Luck to you, and Merry Christmas, to you & yours!! Smile!!

If you can find someone in your area to give you a perm - go for it! People will tell you that you don't want to do that to your hair. They will say it will fry your hair or that straight hair is "in" and you don't want to do that. Don't listen to them! I got a perm a year ago and it was the best thing I ever did to my hair! I have always had long straight hair and I got tired of looking like Marsha Brady! LOL! I got a perm and get compliments on my hair all the time now. The curls are gorgeous! All I do is add mouse after I wash it and let it dry naturally! It's the easiest hairstyle I've ever had and people think it's natural because no one gets perms anymore! LOL! That solved this problem for me and I hope it helps you some! Good luck!

Use aussie! That stuff worked for me and my hair is medium length but its so very thick! I'm positive it will work for you. Or else get a special shampoo for curly hair. You could also gel your hair and scrunch it a few times until the gel holds it. You don't need steam rollers with gel. I just scrunch mine and it's curly all day!

after a shower put hair in a few braids. the less braids the looser waves/curls.

or curl your hair with a curler and while its around the curler.. put a little bbit of hairspray on it

i am jealous....i want streight hair...i have curly hair.....u dont no how many people would want ur hair right now..........well , any way u can brush it when u get out of the shower, then drown it with gel or mouse.....twist ur hair while it dries ..u can hold it in place with clips.
or u can use a curler.......take a strand and spray it with hair sprey then use the curler........that way it stays longer if u put it in before.
