recently a very close relative received an " other than honorable discharge from the Navy....He had signed up for 4 years but only served about 1 year.... Has told his mother they gave him no papers when he left the base and that the Navy would send them along later.... He told his mother that he can file in 6 months and have the OTH discharge changed to a better status??? Can I file anywhere to obtain the exact details of his discharge or is this infomation not public?

It could mean a lot of things but means he was discharged because of his lack to adapt to military life.... probably not good at taking orders.. The information is not public.. but all you or his mother need to do is get the code of the bottom of his DD214 (final discharge papers) when it comes and you can look it up... If he is out he already has it.

Other than honorable is above a dishonorable discharge. He got a DD 214 and it would list his type of discharge as Other than Honorable. It's not true that he didn't get any papers. What it means is that he screwed up either in one incident or in a general way over time and the Navy got rid of him. But if he's in the military then he is also an adult and nobody should be trying to find out the details, that's his personal business. We gotta let these young people grow up and quit treating them like they are 12.

an Other Than Honorable discharge from the military would include UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) action, or a general discharge for failure to adapt ( which can be changed to an honorable at a later time) . Also, female military members can get an OTH discharge through preganancy, which is considered a general discharge. That type of dicahrge can also be reveiwed by a board and be changed to honorable at a later time. All files are considered private.

An OTH discharge means the he did not complete his comtract obligation but didn't do something to warrent a BCD "Bad Conduct Discharge". Not sure why he got out but that is usually the reason. Look up the UCMJ which is the manuel of military laws it stands for "The Uniform Code of Military Justice" run a search for it and you'll get it. The UCMJ explains the types of discharges.

There could be several reasons he received an Other than Honorable discharge. He can apply to have it change to a General discharge but that is it and when he does that he will be able to apply for other government jobs. As to why, maybe you should ask him since he should know why he got kicked out.

Other than honorable discharge (OTH)
These are administrative separations given to those who are separated for misconduct, fraudulent entry, homosexual conduct, or in lieu of trial by court-martial. It is given to servicemembers who have a pattern of behavior that constitutes a significant departure from military norms, or serious acts or omissions that depart from military norms. Although there is no court martial, a discharged servicemember is allowed the right to appeal to an administrative discharge board. The majority of veterans' benefits are not available to individuals with other than honorable discharges.

OTH = Other Than Honorable. It means, It is ANYTHING BUT honorable.
Simplified, You Have..

- Honorable (Best!)
- General (Good, but not great)
- Other Than Honorable (Bad)
- Bad Conduct (Really Bad)
- Dishonorable (Extremely BAD!!)

The OTH status is almost never upgraded by the board of Naval Records (forgot the exact name) http://www.hq.navy.mil/bcnr/bcnr.htm. It goes infront of a three person board, and they decide.

Good Luck

It is not an honorable discharge but not as bad as a dishonorable discharge.I believe a dishonorable one stays on your record for life. The OTH as you call it is not permantly on your record.I dont think you can gain access to the details unless he gives his ok.Why do you feel the need to know.Let sleeping dogs lie my friend!!!

I suggest you confront your relative and ask him for his DD214, which will show why he was discharged in the lowwer right side. I assure you, he was NOT sent home without it. An OTH also means he can not use his VA benefits. Sounds like drug use to me.
