Both Actually, Either way is acceptable, Most people would know what you mean. I usually refer to it as "back East" when someone asks where I am from. I also clarify that I am not from NYC , by stating that I am from upstate NY, the most northern and the most eastern part. The reason I do that is because the big apple is its own state/country, according to Theresa Phillips anyway, the rest of us are Canadians!
