Get a firewire cable for best results, plug it into your computers firewire/iLink/IEEE 1394 port, or if you dont have one, get a PCI firewire adapter card, or USB if your camera supports it. Once its plugged in, windows (I havent tried this on a mac, but it should just mount an icon on the desktop, im guessing) should and usually will recognize the device then after its done installing drivers it will come up with a window asking you what you want to do, and then you can click on capture using movie maker, or if you have another program installed, you can use that. Hope this helps!

for very basic results you can plug a camcorder into a vcr or DVD recorder and use the cameras built in editing functions.
for better results plug the camcorder into your pc and use windows movie maker
for real results plug the camcorder into your pc and use a decent video editing package.
You will need a DV input, ususally firewire to get the footage from your camera into the pc

The Canon MD205 is a miniDV tape based camcorder. you already be attentive to this. For appropriate video high quality (NTSC usual definition, low compression, DV format, video) miniDV works large. To get to the video interior the camcorder (miniDV tape) to a working laptop or workstation, you decide on a Firewire cable (not USB) to connect the DV port (not USB) on the camcorder to the firewire port (not USB) on your workstation. you probably did not let us know which workstation. Firewire, IEEE1394, DV and that i.link are each and every of the same factor. USB won't paintings. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter issues won't paintings. for that reason - the USB connection gets you to the memory stick used purely for stills. in the experience that your workstation has no firewire port, with any luck it has an available boost slot so which you would be able to upload one. You *would desire to* use the camcorder's AV-out connection to a USB-based analog/digital converter (see Elgato, Roxio, top - Dazzle, Hauppage... a lot of others)... With the camcorder properly related to the workstation (above) and in "Play" mode, launch the video editor interior the workstation and capture or Import the video. It relies upon on the workstation and uploading application or video editor you're applying. many instances the imported DV format video is keep to the video editor's format - then, once you're finished enhancing, you render the great undertaking to in spite of format you decide on - AVI. WMV, MOV, MP4... lot of others. It relies upon on what your aim marketplace desires to playback... abode windows is bundled with low-end, in fact featureless MovieMaker. flow as much as Sony Vegas, Adobe preferable Avid - quite a few others. Macintosh is bundled with iMovie (the present version is especially physically powerful). flow as much as very final decrease convey or professional between others. Menus and chapters could routinely be the DVD authoring application. abode windows has MyDVD (and a lot of others), Macs have iDVD, DVD Studio and a gaggle of others.
