Point and shoot digital cameras aren't very good at taking action shoots because:

1. it can take 2-3 seconds for the shutter to fire after you press the button (this is called shutter lag)

2. the auto focus systems are fairly simple and take a while to sort things out

Also you have 2 choices when taking shots of moving objects:

1. hold the camera stationary - the moving object will be blurred. This can be cool if you get it right.

2. pan with the action - the moving object will be in focus and the background will be blurred. These are the "money" shots the sports shooters like.

In either case you can get some great results with a point and shooter, but you must compensate for the shutter lag and the auto focus issues. Each model of camera is different, but here's something you can try out:

1. know the shutter lag of your camera. Then you can use it to help "position" the subject. Imagine taking a picture of a moving horse, but having to press the shutter 2 seconds before. Where is the horse? He's 50' away and out of the frame! But it does work. I've done it with great results.

2. use the pre focus capability of your camera. You can pick an object in the shot and pre focus on that by holding the shutter half way down on most cameras.

To get the "money" shot consistently requires an SLR.

There are a few with new anti-shake unfortunately I haven't tried them out personally.

I do know a feature that you might want to consider

some cameras have eliminated the view finder for a screen only
(the screen only can be an issue in bright sun - you may not be able to see the screen well or when your battery starts to run low - screens use more battery power)

If you have a digital card bring it with you to a camera store or any store that has cameras on display ... you can snap pics and then bring it home or print it to see which you prefer, if the store has 1 hr dev. then you see immed. what you've got, just don't forget your card. My dad did it all the time and I now do it when considering a camera as well.

Digital cameras actually aren't that good for taking pictures of moving things. You should get a regular camera for that.
