I'm moving into a new apartment that unfortunately has a black and white tile wall. I really like ZEN bathrooms so this is not ideal. What is a nice color (other than red) that works well for bathroom accessories like shower curtain, rug and other accents? I was thinking smokey amethyst or plum?

If you like a Zen feeling, try using a soft aqua-tinged blue. It's very calming and will give you a nice look with the black and white.

I had a bathroom with black and white floor tiles. I painted the walls white and the trim black. For accents I bought a collection of cheap frames (5" X 7"), you can buy black frames, but I found a set of matching wooden frames that were pretty cheap so I bought them and painted them. I also bought some black and white cards, the ones with children dressed as adults. Some examples, a young boy kissing a little girl, a young boy handing the girl a flower, etc. . . Each picture had something of color in it, a yellow rose, a red bow tie, you get the picture. It was just enough color to give it some punch. It looked great. I also used lace in the room. I had black shelving with lace trimming the edge of each and a lace window curtain and shower curtain. I looked like a step back in time. I really loved it.

Just about anycolor will go with black and white. The key is to use it sparingly. Darker colors will darken the whole room and emphasize the black. Lighter colors will lighten the room and emphasize the white. Bungalows were often made in the Craftsman style with lots of colors drawn from nature. Pick up some dead leaves and hold them up against the black and white tile and see if you can pick out a few colors you like. If you want a more modern cleaner feel you can go with a pastel color. Architect Michael Graves is very fond of a pastel terra cotta red and a pastel sagey green color (google him for some examples).

sadly you have to avoid a pattern like bubbles or something along the lines of that but a bold colour like blue or green can work to. Red is common because people associate it with diners from the fifties

I'd go with a blue...plum would probably be too dark with the black.
